(KEEPER OF SHEEP OR TILLER OF GROUND)
Are you a keeper of sheep? One might say; “What does it matter?” Well the truth is it matters a lot! Unto God it expresses our hearts condition towards him and our heart condition will indicate what offering we are prepared to give unto him, for this reason we are instructed as we read, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30
It is because this offering is more desired from our king! Let’s face it, He is King! And as our King, Jesus desires our best. As a tiller of the ground Cain gave of the fruit of the ground, perhaps God might have viewed Cain’s offering as just a part of the earth or a bit of dirt, at any rate whatever his thought was, Cain’s offering just wasn’t as great as the offering that his brother Abel offered unto his King. Abel gave of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof, as we read, “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.” Genesis 4:4 There is no doubt that God saw the greatness in Abel’s offering of his precious flock.
Are you working that “9-5”?
Will this be your offering as a tiller of the ground?
Do you have a child or children or family and friends that you consider to be your flock?
Will the firstlings of your flock be your offering?
Have you prepared them by raising them up in the Lord?
Making Disciples of them and then offering them unto your king? This is easy to understand, the choice is, “the fruit of the ground or the precious soul of your flock?
As a king which one would you respect more?
So we can see why God had respect unto Abel more than unto Cain, because his offering was much greater. So now the question that remains is, “What do we offer as our offering unto our King? Are we a keeper of the sheep as Abel was? Or are we sinply tilling the ground only as Cain did working to present unto God our houses, cars, bank accounts, or possessions?
To obtain God’s favor and respect unto our offering we are encouraged to present a greater offering as Abel did!
