"When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, He saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do." John 6:5,6
IN JESUS TODAY!
How? How did Jesus know? Always at work Jesus consulted his Father, he was praying for the people before they arrived! This is the evidence that he wasn't looking to escape, thus we know Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us! Hebrews 13:5 He is always at work on our behalf! Even so, after seeing all of the people, he didn't immediately disclose the plan, instead he saw an occasion to test Philip, saying, "When shall we buy bread". What is it that Jesus would test Philip of? First he tested him of his faith, Now we know by Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith, It is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." and by 1John 5:4 we know "Whosoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith." Secondly he would prove Philip of his confidence, and we know that our confidence is in the Lord, "So we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." Hebrews 13:6 and "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6
So we see the first two things that Jesus wanted to test Philip of was 1. Faith and 2. Confidence There is more, we will pick up on this third part of Philips testing in our next devotion. Our testing or proving times are always to build us up. Jesus always knows exactly what he will do!
