"If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind." Philippians 2:1, 2
IN JESUS TODAY!
Why does it say here, "If there be therefore any..."? Paul is talking directly to those who have received these things, to those who have been consoled by Christ, whereby there has been an alleviation of misery, to those that have received the comfort of love, to those that have received the friendship and fellowship of God's Holy Spirit, and to those that have compassion and pity for others in their heart, because they have received the same in kind by coming to Jesus. Paul is talking to them, he is not talking to the unsaved, inexperienced, or the non-compassionate. Paul says, "If there be..." Leading us all to the next instruction of, "If there is, then here is what they should do!" Paul is talking to you and I also, because we have received, and if there be one that has not received, then this doesn't apply to them as an instruction of what to do! First they must receive before they are expected to do! But since we have received, here is what Paul says that we are to do: First we are to be like minded, like minded with Jesus, having the same mind, and the same love, and the same desire to alleviate the misery of others, consoling their hearts, comforting their troubled minds, and offering the same compassion unto them as we have received from Jesus. Next, we are not to do these things to promote ourselves that we may say, "look at me and all that I have done", but rather in lowliness of mind and heart considering others before ourselves. And finally, we are to put on the mind of Christ and be in agreement with him and each other, to become a united force of love and mercy in the world.
Why does Paul say to us, "If there be any therefore..."? Because we are a select group of people that have been chosen by God to receive these things, and because we have received them freely, we are chosen to share the same compassion, consolation, mercy, and fellowship with those that have not received this yet, but are in need of the love of Christ. We are the ones that Paul is talking to and the ones that Jesus expects to do this work. "If there be therefore any..." And we are the ones to follow these instructions. Don't wait for others to do what you are called to do!
