"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered." Luke 4:1, 2
IN JESUS TODAY!
We need to stop here for a moment and observe. See here that Jesus who is the word of God, became flesh and dwelt among us, as it is written, ""And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us," John 1:14a Notice now, that he is full of the Holy Ghost, this is what will be required for us, should we desire to overcome temptation. How do we get to that place where we are full of the Holy Ghost? Well, first notice that this temptation was not just a one day event, but many days, forty days to be exact, and if we are to overcome we must be filled, not just one day, but every day! It is one thing to be tempted occasionally and overcome, but to be tempted continually, and to stay the course, not giving in, is another thing completely. Not only was Jesus tempted on the first day in the wilderness, but everyday, for forty days, while his flesh was being starved of food to sustain his energy level and strength. So now the question comes: If Jesus didn't eat and he became weak, how then was he able to overcome the devil and this period of testing? Typically, we conclude that to be able to overcome something, a person must be physically strong and mentally prepared for battle, that being understood, shouldn't Jesus have prepared differently? Maybe work out, eat a better diet, take multivitamins, or practice for this testing? Since Jesus did none of these, and he became weak, what or who was his strength that enabled him to prevail? His strength was the words of God and the Holy Spirit! As it is written, "That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." Luke 4:4
The power to overcome temptation and live is in the word of God! We need to be filled continually with God's word, resist daily the temptation to consume outside influences, and speak God's word whenever temptation comes! Being filled with God's word and his Holy Spirit will give us victory, trusting God, his wisdom, and his strength, and not our own!
