SUCCESS IN OUR JOURNEY!
"And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; and commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse." Mark 6:8, 9
IN JESUS TODAY!
Often the difference between success and failure is in a closer look at God's instructions! When reading this scripture, how many read this scripture as follows: "And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, no scrip, no bread, no money for their purse?" How many Disciples and Evangelists fail because they have omitted a very critical part of God's instructions? In paying close attention here we find that God has not said to go on this journey empty handed! As we read, "save a staff only"! Now here comes the questions! First, what is a staff? Is it just a stick, a chalk board pointer, a cane, or a group of cheerleaders to encourage us on the way? Second, what is a staff used for? Perhaps you have heard of the business owner who introduces themselves saying, "Hello my name is so and so... "and this my staff"? Simply put, a staff was used for many things, for walking, for clearing a path, for protection, for balance, to lean upon, and for support. We find this to be as we read it many times, such as when Jacob was crossing the river Jordan in Genesis 32:10 or Moses and Aaron at the Passover in Exodus 12:11
"I am not worthy of the least of these mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordon, and now I become two bands." Genesis 32:10
"And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's Passover." Exodus 12:11
A staff in hand signifies a readiness to respond to God's call, prepared for the journey, and committed to his cause! If we have no support, no staff in hand, then we ought not to blame God if we should struggle and even fail in our journeys. He has given clear instructions! Even King David knew of the importance of God's staff, as we read,
"Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Psalm 23:4
God never says, "Go into the world and preach the Gospel empty handed! Always be prepared! Always take your staff (support)!
GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS ARE CLEAR!
