Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible that offenses will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come.” Luke 17:1
AS MEN OF HONOR:
It is impossible that offenses will come, but woe to him, through whom they come, because this person has been quickly pointed out as not having love or not much love. Someone will always be offended! There are so many possible offenses that it is impossible to not offend some category of persons, unless you are walking in love, yet even though you are walking in love towards them, even this is offensive to some! Yet love is our only buffer.
Love is the buffer to offenses, as we read,
“Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked, (nor overly sensitive and easily angered) it does not take into account a wrong suffered.” 1Corithins 13:5
AND THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE…
Only when we love others do we realize that we might be offensive in some way, when we think of others above ourselves then we can put ourselves in their shoes and see that what we say or do might affect them adversely. Loving others and considering them enables us to avoid being offensive, this requires diligence and discipline with our lives and especially that little instrument that typically causes great damage, our tongue.
We may not intend to hurt someone, but the words that we speak can, as we read,
“The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell” James 3:6
In order to avoid offenses or being offensive we must walk in love as we follow all that Jesus commands us, as we read,
"Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor." Ephesians 5:1, 2
“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith worketh by love.” Galatians 5:6
So let love overcome all offenses by sharing it with others!
