BE SOBER BE VIGILANT!
"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach." 1Timothy 3:2
AS MEN OF HONOR!
Blameless or free from fault is a status that all have when they come to Jesus, because although our sins be like scarlet, and we ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, Jesus washes us white as snow upon our confession of fault, thereby cleansing us from all unrighteousness. 1John 1:10 When we look at this scripture we find that the phrase, "husband of one wife" does not mean that a person was never married before, nor does it mean that a person must be married in order to be used in an office of leadership, The words sober and vigilant which seem to be under an invisible cloud and seem to get the least attention ought to be at the forefront of our lives, whether we desire to serve in the office of a bishop or not, because we are representing Christ always.
HAVING IN US THE MIND OF CHRIST…
To be sober, is to be calm, cool, and temperate in our behavior. And vigilant is to be alert acknowledging that we have an audience watching us expecting that we too are watching our behavior. Given to hospitality is having the Fruit of the Spirit in us, as we read,
"But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." Galatians 5:23, 24
Finally, "apt to teach" is best considered first at the "apt" part of this phrase, "apt" meaning, suitable and ready. They are suitable when having the knowledge and wisdom and understanding of God and his purpose, and they are ready when their desire has become a passion to accomplish what God came to do, and that is to seek and to save the lost, to build others up in the faith, and to edify the Church as a whole.
Serving Jesus and his children requires selflessness. We are all called to serve each other, and Jesus has given to us the examples of how to serve and how to live to qualify for service. Notice being a good judge of others is not a prerequisite! While watching ourselves is!
SERVE JESUS WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART!
