SKILL FOR THE BATTLE
“Praise the Lord, who is my rock, He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle.” Psalm 144:1
(AT THE HOMEFRONT)
“Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemingly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil.” 1Corinthians 13:4, 5
Trouble at home? Are you feeling like you are not much of a Christian? I am here to tell you that you are not alone! You are not the only person that has experienced what you are going through, and like them you will make it through! Oh how the devil likes to hit us at home! Home is a fortress, it is a place of refuge for most of us. Home is the place that we go at the end of a hard work day and expect to be embraced by love and family and a warm smile! Yet what is a home to us if that home is filled with chaos and pain? We will be taking a look into this matter starting with the troubles that King David had at home. We pick up on this in 2Samuel chapter 12. Here we will find a Father’s love torn from within, a Kings household under duress, and here we will see the consequences of sin when it hits home, and a King that presses forward through it all, still managing from day unto day to keep things in order. King David was not a stranger to hard times, he had many battles with many enemies, and he fled from many attempts on his life by King Saul and his fits of jealous rage! So trouble was not new to him, but trouble at home was! David is known as a man after God’s own heart so how is it that David is found in such a terrible place in his life? Starting with chapter twelve of 2Samuel we see the beginning of some severe consequences handed out unto David for his earlier sins of taking another man’s wife (Bathsheba) and entering into an adulterous affair with her. To make matters worse David decides to have Uriah, Bathsheba’s current husband put to death in order to cover his sin! 2Samuel 11:1-17
(AT THE HOMEFRONT)
It is important to note the effects of our sin(s) on others within. Some might think that our sin only affects ourselves and has nothing to do with others around us, and they would be wrong as we will read starting with 2Samuel 12:7
“And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives unto thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? Thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and has taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives from before thine eyes, and give them unto thine neighbor, and he shall lie with thine wives in the sight of this sun. For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.” 2Samuel 12:7-12
Hmm, all of those secret things that we think that no one knows about! Here God through his prophet Nathan tells David how he will suffer, where the trouble will begin, and that everyone is now watching! God allows David to suffer where it is likely to hurt the most, right at the door of his family. “I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house.” This could not be made clearer, as to what will happen next!
Now we will see a different David, a weakened king, a man busted for his pride and infidelity! A king in pain! This is what sin does to us, sin hurts God, sin hurts the ones we love, and it is extremely painful to us! We will pay the cost and still not get all that we deserve, for the wages of sin is death, but thank God for his longsuffering love towards us in that he gives to us his gift of life even when we deserve death!
