David attempted to go, but was unable to go forward because this suit of armor was too heavy and had not been proven in battle! So David laid it aside! In order for us to go forward into battle with our Goliath we must first lay aside this weight, and our sins of the past and then we must rely on what has been proven, even God’s wisdom and power. David relied on God because God had been proven in times past. God delivered David from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear so David didn’t need Saul’s armor to protect him, it would simply weigh him down, and slow him down, and cause him to not be able to run to meet his enemy! Friend we must rely on God who has been proven time and time again in our life! Hebrews 12:1 tells us the following,
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1
This is a primary skill for the battle!
David was able to lay aside this excess weight without fear, noting that the Armor of the Lord was sufficient, instead of the traditional armor that men wore, David chose God’s breastplate of righteousness and God’s helmet of salvation, as we read,
“Finally my brethren be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the whiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand, Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness: and let your feet be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” Ephesians 6:10-117
